With recent events of domestic violence in the media; Chris Brown battering Rihanna, Shawne Merriman from the Chargers allegedly choking Tila Tiquila, I feel that it’s imperative we discuss domestic violence.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, male or female. Domestic violence can happen to you, no matter what race you are, no matter your social status, no matter your educational background, no matter your income status. Domestic Violence doesn’t discriminate at all.

I’ve had my share of abusive relationships. I know first hand how serious it can get, and how stuck you feel when you are in this type of situation. You aren’t stuck, there is a way out.

With that said, tips for those who have been, will be, or are in an abusive situation are as followed:

  • Call the police if you are in danger, 911 or the local police is fine
  • Ask friends and family for support (You have a friend here, email me at jennreed@reedwhatmatters.com for support as well)
  • Remove yourself from the location, finding a safe place to be is key
  • Seek medical help if needed
  • Seek legal help by getting a protection order

You can find these tips and many more at http://www.domesticviolence.org/. Visit Help Guide Domestic Violence and Abuse as well. This guide goes over the cycles of abuse, different types of abuse, tips to get help, and signs for others you know who may be abused.

Any signs of your safety being in jeopardy, seek the help that is necessary to put you in a better situation.
