SafeGround Raided and 15 More Arrested

On top of the 17 that were arrested Friday, September 4th, 15 more of our homeless friends were arrested this gloomy morning, September 12th.

It appears there will be no break for Sacramento’s homeless community, SafeGround tenants found themselves raided by the police, and arrested once again. Arrested for what, you ask? Arrested for being homeless, and attempting to sleep in an environment were there are no drugs, alcohol or violence!

This time it was a bit different, however. Not only were arrest made, and camping equipment taken away by the police, this time the police took their cooking source, a BBQ grill, and emptied most of the “private lot” of peoples personal property. Bikes, chairs, everything is gone!

This truly saddens me. We have our homes, blankets, heaters, and such. Shelters are full! What does the city want? Should our homeless friends sleep on a bench in front of a local business, with only a jacket, to be harassed by the police to keep it moving?! This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Efforts haven’t been stumped in any way! According to Sacramento Bee, “Sister Libby Fernandez of Loaves and Fishes, which has supported homeless efforts to occupy the “safe ground” campsite, said that churches and other agencies are resupplying camping gear and that a group of homeless people and supporters plan to return to the site this afternoon….”

Note: Before you ask why I don’t let them all sleep at my home (since that is the #1 question supporters see in the news forums)… I’d be homeless too, if I did! Lets be realistic! I live in a 3 bedroom apartment, with a family size of 8 somedays! I’d be booted out with a quickness. When I had more space, there wasn’t a moment in a five years span, that I didn’t have someone living with us! I do my part to build up our community, because our community does the same for us!
