Overwhelmed & Overweight

Overwhelmed and Overweight, how many of you came here because you feel the same way? I was browsing iMommyTalk.com and came across, How concerned are you with your children’s weight?, and even put in a lengthy reply. My son, Jamarae, at age 10 is overweight, and my daughter, Renae, at age 14 is underweight with the other four children being the right weight for their height. It’s not just the two kids with the “weight watch” issue, the husband and I have gained our fair share of pounds these last five years or so.

So now that I’ve told you that there are three size groups in my family… Too big, too small, and just right (I’m sure I sound like Goldilocks examining the three bears beds)… what to do? I just graduated to 2% milk! I’ve been having the family drink whole milk all this time because my dear Renae, being underweight, and their being a baby in the house. We all agree it’s time to leave whole milk on the shelf. Besides the milk factor, we watch our serving portions (excluding Holidays), and we aren’t lazy (well I can be at times, but shhh). We move about a lot, getting our task done and such.

My big concern is this, being of three size groups we do have our separate needs for what we eat and don’t eat, all the while getting our basic food group portions! We all should exercise more, no doubt about that! How do we do this on a budget and having different schedules at times? I’ve been Google searching away and found, Family-Health-and-Nutrition.com. Brilliant, articles and more articles about my trials, Oh boy! Kids Nutrition Blog!, Healthy Grocery Tips On A Budget, Food Pyramid Guide For Busy Moms!, Free exercise tips for the whole family!… The list goes on and on! I’m very excited to say the least.

I’ve been paying attention to the little things when it comes to health, I’m setting a goal to step things up a notch! I’m taking a lead and making things happen one step at a time! Time for better food and more exercise, isn’t it about time? Who is in on the plan with me? Does anyone want to work as support for each other with me? Please comment below and share any tips you may have for the busy family.

  1. Hi Jennifer! I know this is such a big topic in so many households. Especially in today’s weight obsessed society. It’s hard… the price of groceries keeps getting higher (and healthy foods cost more than junk foods), we don’t want to put too much emphasis on “weight” in front of our children and we want them to eat well balanced foods and exercise – all the while, everyone has different schedules.

I think you are taking a step in the right direction. You are doing something about it. I am afraid that many parents just give up.

I think with your active participation your son will be just fine. I think if we can get our kids moving everyday, it will be one of the best things for them. I don’t think that’s necessarily an easy task but it is doable. It doesn’t cost anything to go for a walk or run around the backyard, etc. And another big tip is watching out for foods/drinks with high fructose corn syrup and trans fats… and personally, I don’t think kids should drink soft drinks at all. This is easy for me to say, because my 7 yr old has yet to taste a soft drink. So it’s not an issue in our home… yet. Yes, I realize that one day one of his friends will probably offer him a Coke or Pepsi and that will be that. :( He will be hooked. Seriously, I do think soft drinks are just sugar in a can (or bottle).

Jennifer, as for your daughter, I can tell you from experience that she will more than likely be just fine. I don’t know how much underweight she is or if she is trying to be underweight intentionally or she eats plenty of calories but just doesn’t gain weight? See, throughout my childhood, teens and most of my twenties, I was underweight. When I graduated high school, at 18, I weighted 82 lbs. Two years later I tried to join the Air Force but couldn’t pass the physical because I didn’t weight their minimum weight requirement, I was 20 yrs old and weighed 86 lbs. Finally, at the age of 24, I hit triple digits (100 lbs) on the scales. I remember it being such a big deal. I had spent years trying so hard to gain weight. Flash forward – now I’m *cough -forty-something- cough* and struggling with being over-weight. I have high cholesterol and was told to lose 30 lbs. That was 3 1/2 months ago and I’ve lost 12 lbs as of this morning. But it is such a struggle. It is much harder the older you get to lose weight.

So, what I’m trying to say is that maybe you don’t need to worry so much about your daughter. You know her situation… if she isn’t trying to lose weight and you think she is getting the calories she needs, maybe she just has a very active metabolism like I did.

I’m so sorry for going on and on here. :-) I subscribed to your blog so I can keep up with how this goes. And looking forward to learning along with you! :)

    • @Donna, Thanks Donna for such a great reply and for subscribing to our blog. I thank you for your encouragement as well. It means a lot!!! As for my daughter, she doesn’t try to lose weight. She wants to be bigger. She has gained some weight recently. She is 14 years old and 6 feet tall, but only weighs 116 lbs. I think you’re right about her growth. She will gain more weight as she ages like you and I have lol. She looks great, but I know the doctor wants to see a good ten more pounds on her. We will see as time goes by. Thanks again for your comment!
