Thursday’s Thought: Giving Back!

Posted 12 Nov 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Reed Educates, Taking a Stand

This week I’ve been sifting through my belongings, packing and such! I find that many things my family considers junk another can use! Of course, it’s time to give back. Then I think about those in need that need more then what I have sitting in my home. What can I do more to give back?

Think of the little things I buy throughout the month, a Pepsi here, a bag of chip there… I probably spend a few dollars a day on much of nothing for the kids and me. I set to do something more for another and a bit less for myself! As I think of this my daughter speaks to me about wanting to blog about a report she is doing for abused children in Africa. What better way to tie in my wanting to give more to another in need. Maybe she would like to help those she is researching.

After all this thought I was contacted by globalgiving.com (a million little earth-changing ideas)! Sky is the limit. Just about any cause you can think of from homelessness, to climate change, to children in need they have a cause listed in which we could help. You name it; there is a way to help out through their website.

I’m sitting my children down to tell them to pick a cause dear to them. When they want that little bag of chips from the corner store, I will ask them, “Chips or your Cause?” They can decide where that dollar goes. I’ll allow them to earn extra money for their cause as well. I’m excited and will keep you posted on which child of mine picked which cause and how much they were able to donate.

Sinya is thinking of helping Kenya families have clean water and Jamarae is thinking of helping Afghan boys trade guns for books. We will see what they chose and how much they earn. I’m very excited.

“Let me Loosen Up my Tie”

Posted 02 Nov 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Reed Tidbits, Self Awareness

Let me Loosen Up my TieI’ve been blogging since May 2009. Not long at all, changes will come along the way as I see fit or as our readers go through changes.

Changes We’ve Already Made

  1. Reed What Matters lowered the amount of self awareness post - I don’t write those daily anymore but I still write on how to empower self if that is what you are here for.
  2. Our savings moved to Saving Money with Reed. Those who come here just for freebies and coupons would rather not search through articles of family stuff, and those who come here for articles don’t want to sift through coupons and such. I get that!
  3. Reed What Matters annoys you here and there by changing our theme around. Sorry, I want to get the site right. We are new, this will happen from time to time until it is right for you and me.

Changes to Come

  1. I’ve become more comfortable each day, I’m going to “Loosen my tie” so to speak – I’ve never been nothing less then myself, but I’ve stopped writing a post because I was worried what would come of certain post. Would I lose all my readers? Would I gain more? Will my readers care if I post a tidbit or two? Those are questions I’ve asked myself time and time again, all the while clicking the “delete draft” button. Nothing shocking, just me being me. I stop myself thinking… “Does that really add value?” I can now answer, “It may not for some but it will for another!” Someone will love it, someone went through it, someone never thought about it!
  2. Oh, and I have to get a real job soon… It’s been a nice year at home but… yea, a real job! One that involves leaving the house so… I won’t write as much, mostly daily, but not as much! Anyone want to take a stab at guest posting, maybe you don’t have a blog and have been thinking of trying it out. Maybe you have one and enjoy guest posting! Let me know. I’d be glad to let you get a feel for it or write about what really matters, family education and entertainment, right?
  3. When I made this site my hopes were that the whole family would be a part of Reed What Matters, this didn’t happen! Don’t be suprised if Reed What Matters extends out to kids in the near future.

All in all, I’m here to teach, to learn and to grow with you; my readers, my friends, my family, my community! I hope you stick around because I’m not going anywhere but forward.  If you disagree with these changes or want to add your 2 cents, please comment below my dear friends! I love to hear from you!

Negativity

Posted 12 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Self Awareness

41FACDE4BGL__SL160_Our self awareness series will take on another voice today, Anne Wilson Schaef wrote a daybook called “Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much,” I’d like to go over her October 12th entry “Confused Thinking/Judgementalism.”

I realize what a lot of negativity there is in the world and all around us and how easy it is to become part of that negativity and to be sucked into it and become part of the chaos and confusion if one isn’t very careful. – Eileen Caddy

The above Shaef quotes and explains how easy it is to get sucked into negativity, and in being judgmental. At the workplace we are taught to look for error, and to make change. In working day to day we’re “rewarded for analyzing, comparing, criticizing, and being negative.”

How do we break the cycle, and stop just at that? Analyzing and comparing is one thing, judging is another. When we lose sight and become judgmental of people or things, we are now biased and have lost complete focus of the job at hand.

This happens at home as well. What we see daily in the news, in our homes, or right out our front door, that site can be a lesson by analyzing and comparing the situation. We lose the lesson in our observation when we judge. Not only do we lose focus, we also look like big idiots.

I find myself getting too involved and getting reeled into garbage as well. In regards to my daughter getting sick (Parenting Mistakes & My Poor Sinya), I vented a bit, and was a bit judgmental. Not so bad that I called out any one’s name in a bad manner, but I was frustrated enough. I should’ve just taken the incident for what it is, some people just don’t know better, and kids get sick. Oh well, keep it moving. See, as I said, we all get too involved one way or another. We need to be aware is all, and bring things back into perspective.

    “Downshifting: Living in Lower Gear”

    Shifting Gears

Things do not change; we change. – Henry David Thoreau

Our self awareness series entry by Sarah Ban Breathnach for October 6th, in her book, Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy quotes the above statement.

Breathnach speaks of slowing down. At times we get so busy trying to do what “the mainstream” is doing.  In doing this, we wear ourselves out and lose focus of our passion that took us down that route in the first place. Making changes is a great thing to do, just pace yourself. I know I keep speaking of pace. I believe things change only as we change. We must evolve to bring change forth. We don’t all have to change at the same pace, some can move faster, some slower, and some can choose to not move at all!

You don’t always have to do what the “others” are doing or have what the “others” have to stay afloat or to do well. I see those around me going to these great blogger conventions, they work with great review companies, their on the local news channels, and work with the big advertisers! I’ll get there, but I can’t lose site of my passions while I go in that direction. I’m here to write.

Matter of a fact, recently I had an advertiser tell me they only work with sites that have articles on full display. I believe they were afraid that they wouldn’t get enough exposure because I show just a bit of an article allowing you, my reader, to choose to read more or not to. I can see their point, I flipped the switch and it didn’t look right with this theme. So I stick to truncated post because with this theme it pleases the eye better. “Maybe next time” Mr. Advertiser. I have others to work with. And I’m happy the way things are for now. I may change because we as people do change, so I say “for now.”

In your day to day lives, slow down and remember why you do what pleases you. You don’t have to do what the world is doing, and if you are, make sure it pleases you! Do you have an example where you took a different path in business or in pleasure just for the simple fact that it pleased you, even if it wasn’t the most suitable idea? Please share by commenting below. I love to here my reader’s insights on matters as this.

    “Mediation as Meditation”

    Posted 05 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
    Category Reed Educates, Self Awareness

Most important for us is a good spiritual relationship between employees and management. – Tatsuhiko Andoh

Our self awareness series entry by Sarah Ban Breathnach for October 5th, in her book, Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy quotes the above statement.

Breathnach speaks of mediation as meditation, this is so important. We spend most of our waking hours working! We should feel very comfortable in a place that we spend much of our time at. While we are working in our homes, in the office, at a construction site, or where ever we call work, we should make sure our day is a little more pleasant then the day before.

What causes you to not want to get up and get started for the day? Is it that your duties are boring you and have become repetitive? Could it be you don’t like what you do or what your company stands for? Maybe you want more responsibility by taking on a new task? It could be that you do entirely too much and you need a break?

When in you’re in a rut, make a change! It’s easier to make a change when working for yourself, but you can still work on change working with management on the job. If possible, you can make a life change, and do something entirely different. Not all of us can have it like that; all things don’t always change for us in one day. What Breathnach tells us to do, mediate to get the comfort we desire?

If your daily tasks have become repetitive, ask your employer to accommodate you! Can you rearrange your tasks’ order? Can you change positions within your company? Maybe you need a new responsibility? Let your manager know you want more!

If you dont like what you do or what your company stands for, look for another job that has a goal you share passion for. Sometimes changing jobs isnt necessary, make an action plan for your current company to commit to change. Share this plan with management, maybe your company will change for you.

If you are doing entirely too much and feel worn down at work, delegate task to others who may be in a rut because they want a new task themselves. Talk to management and ask which task they dont mind you sending out for others to do. Delegating is a strong leadership skill, this could be rewarding for you if you want a leadership position down the road.

What it all boils down to mediating with management to allow you to be more comfortable where you spend a huge chunk of your day at. If your management, then make a difference in your day that works for you and for your business.

Have you reached out to your employer in such a way? Have you been able to make drastic or simple changes that bring you comfort in the work place? Please share by commenting below. Your response may help another. Thank you!

    Our Communities’ Racial Divide

    Posted 27 Sep 2009 — by Jennifer
    Category Taking a Stand

Reading the article “Human rights activist finds noose on porch” in the Spokesman Review brings me sorrow. This woman, Rachel Dolezal, who directs Coeur d’Alene’s Human Rights Education Institute, woke up Sunday morning to a noose on her porch. This is horrible. To top it off, she has to decide to educate her son on the matter or to make up some explanation to give him peace of mind; she decided giving him peace of mind was best!

In examining this article further, the Spokesman Review states, a “human rights activist Tony Stewart said racially motivated incidents are on the rise here and nationwide. He traced that to the increasing diversification of the population and to the election of the nation’s first black president”

More to often we are seeing daily, a racial divide among our communities for sure. More often issues are posed as black or white, and not just a people thing. In some ways, our communities are more aware of racism then before, and in some ways our communities are denying the racial divide that is evident in out communities! How do you deny what is in our faces, watching people holding up signs of President Obama as a witch doctor, among other things.

What changes have you noticed in your communities since President Obama has become our President? Are your communities divided by racial tension? Are hate crimes on a rise where you come from? Or is it completely different in your community, maybe your community has come together building a tighter force and now works together in ways that all communities should work together? Maybe, everything is just the same as before where you come from! Please share by commenting what your observations have been in regards to your community.

    Time is of the Essence!

    Posted 21 Sep 2009 — by Jennifer
    Category Reed Tidbits

Day in and day out, we handle our day as if it’s just another day. Grabbing our to-do list, finishing our goals for the day, not getting enough sleep, leaving our spouse to fall asleep on their own, and at times forgetting to tuck our children in for bed, forgetting time is of the essence.

Time is of the Essence. I say this because we’ve had our wake up call! My husband received a phone call this morning that his old friend, whom he hasn’t spoke to in years, passed in a car accident this morning. This man is but 37 years old, if that! His children have lost their father, if he had a significant other, she no longer wakes up to him, or falls asleep with his warmth.

My point is this; we get so caught up in time… Too often, I sleep in bed with the kids, and my husband is on the couch. Too often, we don’t speak about life; we only speak about what is necessary to run the house. Too often, we brush the kids off, because we are busy. Time is of the essence. It’s time to put down our to-do list and put down our pride, just for a few moments out the day, and remind our loved ones that we’re truly there for them.

Have you told your good friends you were thinking about them lately? Is there someone out there that you should reach out? Maybe, there is that one person that you need to forgive. Have you spoken the words of love to your family lately, in action, not in words? Let’s all be sure to not lose sight of time, and remind those around us how special they really are.

    Tip Her What?!

    Posted 30 May 2009 — by Jennifer

2599974654_7a7ebc1e97_mAs I told you earlier today, I was going to get a cheap $15 hair cut. Oh I was wrong. I made a huge mistake. I went to this really cutsie place. Looked like something out of the movies. The haircut was only going to be $23, so I was still saving. The lady who was working on my hair was great, and had real pretty hair herself. See, a beautician who has pretty hair makes me have hope that she will do a good job. But quick note, never discriminate – a beautician with jacked hair can still be great. Like the mechanic who never repairs his own car, the beautician may just not have the time or care for her own hair as she takes to hair like art in others.

    Well, anyhow, I had hope.

So she did great. Real great. Asked me key questions about my styling habits and about the look I was trying to achieve. She asked questions that made me know she was going to do a great job.

So now I’m in a hurry, she made my hair look real fly. I was so happy, but we took forever styling it and my husband seemed a little ancy.
