The Passing of Renae’s Grandparents

Posted 24 Nov 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Reed Tidbits

I get a phone call yesterday from my daughter, Renae, around noon. What is she calling me for? She should be at school and not on the phone with me! Renae sadly tells me she was pulled out early because her Poppa passed away. Last month the news came that her Grammy passed. Strange to say, Renae and I were just speaking of older couples, when one passes the other dies soon after quite often. Even though Renae and I were prepared for this and spoke of him possibly passing soon, the news shocked and hurt me.

I haven’t been close to Grammy and Poppa since I’ve established my relationship with my current husband. However, seeing them every few years at gatherings at Renae’s father’s home was always refreshing to me. My memories of her grandparents have always been of greatness!

Poppa was a great cook, he owned a restaurant in Folsom, Ca. Something about that place sits as a life lesson for me. I worked at his restaurant after school let out, or on Holiday’s and Summer break often. Grabbing a few items often at the good ole’ Smart & Final for the restaurant, smelling his biscuits come out fresh from the oven, peeling and cutting up home-fries in preparation of the day, learning how to fold a cloth napkin correctly, washing loads and loads of dishes in scalding hot water, and a matter of a fact… he taught me how to make chicken fried steak(yes, his is a lot better tasting then mine, but hey)! Do I need to say more? When I think of home cooking and words of the wise, I think of him first. He was always one to show love through food and speak of what needed to be spoken of in a precise manner. Poppa wasn’t one to be of any foolishness and he was a great man, a man of honor, a man who worked hard for his family.

Grammy was another I was very fond of. Tears come to my eyes thinking of her and what she meant to me. I remember sitting at her bedside when she was quite healthy and young, this was about 15-20 years ago, well before Renae at 14 years of age was a thought. Grammy would be there watching her shows speaking of funny and trivial family stories from when she was a girl, when she first met Poppa, when she was a young mother, of when she was a new grandmother, and of recent events. She would tell me about her shows, and there was always something around the house to be fixed… I knew about all of it! She spoke so fast, most couldn’t keep up! I could, I always kept up! I remember her smell, the softness of her hair, the warmth of her hugs, and the gentleness in her eyes all to well. She was a great woman!

When I speak to my husband about the future and imagine me as a Grandmother I remember how she was and tell him that wll be me( as if I could be so GREAT)… I never said to him I wanted to be like her as a Grandmother but my examples are of what I know of her. She always had a story to tell and these stories were great ones. She could tell a story about nothing and turn it into something without changing it one bit. A talented, wise, loving, gentle yet “about business” woman she was.

True indeed, they lived a lifetime. They lived the golden years. I pray that my husband and I can live the golden years just as they did. Sure they had struggles but they had an unconditional and undying love. I miss you Grammy and Poppa and I thank you for instilling the values in me that you did. You will never be forgotten and will be always treasured!

It’s Always Something

Posted 11 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Self Awareness

11227682_0f70b4e1d9Isn’t it always something? Even on the best of days, there is that unpaid bill, lack of time, a headache! Whatever it is be thankful that it’s just an issue, and not a crisis. Even the most well put together people have an issue or two that they can talk about. What would be life without a tribulation now and again? Where would we get our lessons from if there wasn’t a mishap here and there?

Our self awareness series entry by Sarah Ban Breathnach for October 11th, in her book, Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy speaks of there always being something that we can complain of. She speaks on a greater note; however, being thankful your complaints are only issues and not a crisis. Too many people start living for their true passions once a crisis hits. The crisis can be a health issue, a death in the family, a complete turnover on financial status, homelessness, anything that is life changing.

I know this pretty well, I didn’t get back into writing until recently. I had to be home from work with health issues to start writing again. I used to write poetry when Renae was small, about twelve years ago. Why did I stop? Where did I lose my authentic self?

This book was given to me by my sister in law about 5-6 years ago. The excerpt reads, “Jen, You are sunshine – do what you are meant to do! -shine- :) , D’Jne” She seen it, I had lost something. She told me one day, when I walked through the room I had a glow about me, this glow made the room brighter which made others happy. She told me I was lacking that! My husband said the same thing in other words about a year ago.

These are questions we must ask! I ask all of you to please not forget who you are! Look in the mirror and bring your authentic self back. What pleases you? What makes you the person that defines wholeness? What are you missing?

It may always be something, but it could be worse so please find who you lost, or if you haven’t lost yourself keep you alive. SHINE!

    “The Ultimate Seduction”

    Posted 02 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
    Category Reed Educates, Self Awareness

It is your work in life that is the ultimate seduction – Pablo Picasso

Our self awareness series, day 5, entry by Sarah Ban Breathnach for October 2nd, in her book, Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy quotes the above statement.

Passion, I’m very passionate about the work I do, writing, meeting the quotas I set for myself. The passion I have for my work runs through my veins. I’m like a busy bee, work! work! work! When I see I met my goal, I shine! It’s called “workaholism and perfectionism.” I say that because sometimes I get my biggest joys from these accomplishments through working, not through the real joys out in the other part of our world called “life outside of work”!

Breathnach speaks of that “one more thing” mentality. Last night I told myself I can’t sleep, computer time, no work, play time, play a game or something, ended up working! Breathnach, also, speaks of canceling plans with friends and family for work. If Im in the middle of a project for the website I don’t want to set it down for later. I must reach a point of satisfaction in my place of the project to stop.

Why do we get so involved with our work, why does work become filled with an unhealthy amount of passion? Breathnach believes “we lost faith in Spirit’s willingness to help us achieve success.” We believe we have to work hard and work long hours to make things happen. We want results now. The more we work on something we may feel validated or closer to success.

However, success will come even if we slow down. It may even come faster if we pace ourselves. If the work we are doing is truly for our future, and it we work on our passions smartly instead of becoming physco behind it, it may even work out better. Pacing yourself helps you stay sane. Things seem to fall in place better when I pace myself. Passion is great; working hard is great, just please pace yourself with your passions!

Do you, too, struggle with pacing yourself? Do you know when to stop? Please share with comments. I love to hear from my readers.

Is the H1N1 Flu Vaccine Safe?

    Posted 28 Sep 2009 — by Jennifer

The H1N1 flu vaccine, will your family be vaccinated?

Here and there the media gives me a scare. This video is one out of a few good reports on the H1N1 flu vaccine. Searching the internet, I find information about the flu and the vaccine, but not much saying that the vaccine is safe… More so, I see the world telling me to stay clear away from the vaccine.

    YouTube Preview Image

Watching the video, I feel a bit better about vaccinating my children. I still have concerns either way. My main concern is there hasn’t been enough testing, and many health professionals aren’t getting their families vaccinated.

What to do? I’m ready to go to extremes! Do I pass out face mask, or chose to homeschool? Yes I’m a scardy cat, the anti-bacterial has been passed out already, and I’ve over educated the kids on proper hand washing, and many times spoke of staying clear of sick children. What to do, What to do?!

Do I vaccinate my children and risk side effects, or do I not vaccinate them and risk the swine flu deciding my families fate? What is your family doing, vaccinating or not?

Birth Weight Health Risk & My Experience

    Posted 25 Sep 2009 — by Jennifer
    Category Reed Educates, Reed Tidbits
A 19 pound baby? Are you serious? Have you seen the recent news of the woman in Indonesia who had a 19 pound baby? What a miracle!?

I thought my babies were big. My smallest baby was one ounce shy of being 9 pounds, and my biggest baby was 10 lbs 1 oz! We have big babies here at the Reed house!

Health risk comes from having big babies. The only baby I had zero complications with was my smallest, Sinya. My last, Yissie, could’ve been fatal for her or me.

Having Yissie, put a stop to my baby making days for sure! A week before having her I could hardly breathe laying in bed, trying to induce her early was a failure! When she was ready to come, it was a frightening experience. Come time to push! Low and behold! At least 10-15 doctors ran in the room, one knocking over the big bulky monitoring system. My baby was so broad, she was stuck, and her shoulders weren’t making their way out!

My husband couldn’t take it, he runs out the room, doctors are shouting, my visitors crying, my mother in law shouts “the devil is a lie!”, and the only one that would watch the ordeal pan out is my own mother.

One doctor yells at me, to “PUSH”… This isnt a regular request to push, this was a “your life depends on this” push! Now they have her shoulders out, she is still stuck! A few doctors are now trying to inch my babies’ torso out by turning her from side to side!

Once things calmed down, they take my baby from me, her blood sugar is low! Now that her blood sugar is fixed, the doctors are concerned with my health! My blood pressure was too low and temperate too high. I’m told I could hemorrhage, or have an infection. With my symptoms and the fact I had a large baby, I was to not get out of bed. I must wait, and watch my health get better or worse!

Of course, Im fine. I’m here today! You’re baby can be small, or large! Health risk comes with the territory! Giving birth to any baby can pose complications! This woman in Indonesia with a 19 pound baby, she experienced nothing less of a miracle! Click here to read more about this miracle.

Have you had any birthing complications? Please share your story with our readers by commenting.

    Interview Tomorrow

    Posted 26 Aug 2009 — by Jennifer
    Category Reed Tidbits

27767393_cb0d610250As you all may know, I’ve been struggling with dizzy symptoms since February 2008. I lost my job of seven years due to my dizziness, among other symptoms I was having. I love going to work, to the office, a 9 to 5. Health is more important though.

When I was working, I worked a full shift, and knew cutting back hours is what I needed after I got some control over my symptoms. Cutting back hours wasn’t an option at the time, so I have been unemployed pretty much a year now.

I say, pretty much, because I have been working on this website, took a job that didn’t work out to well, and have been doing some volunteer work as of lately.

A part time job is exactly what I need. I need a position in which I could be home before the kids get home from school, so that I can have the energy to be a mom when I get home from work. Getting off at 7pm, with no condition, then helping with homework, and then cooking, means no me time. I need me time. Time to unwind and get myself together for the next day.

A part time job, also, means I can fit school in, and have time to maintain the website, and fit in time to do volunteer work on my good days.

So, wish me luck! I want this job, it’s close, it’s part time, and a good job.
