Am I Not Human?: Homelessness & Sacramento’s Anti-Camping Ordinances

Posted 27 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Taking a Stand

It’s been cold out, real cold. I lay in my bed last night with the chills because my husband was hogging the covers. Don’t I have nerve? I could have turned on the heater, or grabbed another blanket easily! What if I didn’t have the luxury of shelter, a heater, extra blankets like many families who are searching for a place just to rest as the shelters fill up!

In recent news, KCRA.com mentioned Sacramento’s Mayor Kevin Johnson spoke publicly about the the city, county and federal government approving funds for Sacramento to “create 269 shelter beds.” That is great, but what is the city going to do about the many families that will still need shelter.

SafeGround Sacramento has a temporary solution and Mayor Kevin Johnson hears their voices. SafeGround Sacramento “called for a moratorium on enforcement of the city’s anti-camping ordinance.” As it stands today our homeless community is awoken when found sleeping on the streets to move or can be sited with a ticket for illegal camping. Imagine that, no place to sleep and you wake up to a ticket you can’t afford all because you have no where else to sleep. SafeGroundSacramento aims to help those who can’t just rest. Johnson hears their voices KCRA.com states he has “said he will have more to say next month about a permanent camping site for the homeless.”

Please reach out to SafeGround Sacramento and learn more about what their mission is by visiting their website (click here). You can see their flight on video by award-winning film maker, Costa Mantis as well by clicking here.

Note: Roots of Humanity ”On the 27thof each month a group of bloggers post on the subject of human rights. The Am I Not Human Campaign was designed to help bring awareness to social issues that you can help to work on solving.”

Thank you Roots for Humanity for calling for such an action! We all should take a stand and let our voices be heard!

My friends if you have a topic you like me to take a stand on with you or if you would like to give honorary mention to someone who is making a difference in a future post please comment below or use our contact us form.

topcommentatorI just added a nifty tool to Reed What Matters! Top Commentators Widget, it’s on our right sidebar to the bottom a bit. This tool tells everyone who comments the most on Reed What Matters website. I set it up to list the top 5 commentators for the last 90 days. I’m in love with this tool. I can now formally thank my top 4 commentators:

1. My Mama

Mama, I love you and thank you for reading my blog regardless of how busy you are! I thank you even more for leaving such great feedback in our comments. Everyone check her out! She is an amazing soul who does lots for our homeless community and for our climate. You can spot her efforts at: SafeGround Sacramento & SHOC!

2. Hailey’s Dragonfly Garden

My lovely friend with a sweet soul I met on Twitter! She is the reason I’m only formally thanking my top 4 commentators (she can’t decide if she wants to type her user name on our website as “Hailey’s” or “Haileys” so she stole two spots Ha-Ha!) She is always there for me when I need her to be, and she always reminds me to have a good day. She also has a fabulous website offering the best handmade soaps! Not only is her soaps the best, but they’re affordable. Check out my review and her site here: Hailey’s Dragonfly Garden of Botanicals Review & Hailey’s Dragonfly Garden.

3. Donna

Someone I’m very fond of. I found her on iMommyTalk.com. Most of her post I have to comment because the topics are great. She Vlogs (video blogs), I don’t always get to watch her videos because my home gets pretty noisy. She covers me there and types up a summery of her vlog. Still video or summery, COMMENT WORTHY!  Thank you Donna for a great website!

SafeGround Raided and 15 More Arrested

On top of the 17 that were arrested Friday, September 4th, 15 more of our homeless friends were arrested this gloomy morning, September 12th.

It appears there will be no break for Sacramento’s homeless community, SafeGround tenants found themselves raided by the police, and arrested once again. Arrested for what, you ask? Arrested for being homeless, and attempting to sleep in an environment were there are no drugs, alcohol or violence!

This time it was a bit different, however. Not only were arrest made, and camping equipment taken away by the police, this time the police took their cooking source, a BBQ grill, and emptied most of the “private lot” of peoples personal property. Bikes, chairs, everything is gone!

SafeGround Sacramento’s Rally at City Hall

Posted 10 Sep 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Taking a Stand

SafeGround Sacramento went to City Hall today to have a peaceful rally to speak to our Mayor, City Council and City Manager to address the anti-camping ordinance, and to ask they provide “SafeGround, a legal campground for homeless people who have signed a pledge of no drugs, no alcohol, no violence.”

This is very touching, and needs attention. Here is a video to today’s events provided by Sacramento Loaves & Fishes:

SafeGround Sacramento; Helping the Homeless!

Posted 01 Jul 2009 — by Jennifer
Category Taking a Stand
Much of what happens in the middle of the night for the homeless is being awakened by a classic street sweep. No rest, as if resting on a park bench or the steps of a local business for the night is really rest. Wouldn’t it best to just let one sleep. Tonight the homeless can rest thanks to SafeGround Sacramento.

Today SafeGround Sacramento held a march/rally for a great cause! SafeGround’s mission today was to help the homeless have a safe and legal place to stay until the housing issues are resolved.

According to Channel 10 ABC News, SafeGround Sacramento efforts didn’t go unnoticed! The city has agreed to allow those who are homeless to stay at a small park,  just at the end of Bercut Drive, in Sacramento for 24 hrs to rest. It’s only one night, but making any difference is great! Thank you SafeGround for all that you do! And of course, thank you Mama for being part of something so great. Please visit SafeGround Sacramento’s website at http://www.safegroundsac.org/ and help out with this great cause.
