$260 Million Loss on H1n1 Vaccines

Did you and your family get the H1n1 vaccine when the scare first hit? Sad to say we lost some lives due to H1n1 in many countries! I wasn’t sure how safe my family was in public places and I worried about my children being at a public germfest, like school or the doctor’s office.

The Reed’s chose not to vaccinate as of yet. My husband worked for a company that manufactured the H1N1 vaccine for a short time. Stories he heard, weither tall tales or truth, freaked him out enough to not allow us to be vaccinated. He wishes for the vaccine to be out longer before we subject our children to medication that may be faulty, but then we subject ourselves to other possibilities as well in not vaccinating ourselves. What to do?

Well, today I read on MBC.com that we had $260 million in loss with the H1N1 vaccine due to expired vaccines and this dollar amount is set to grow as more vaccines will expire in the near future. We made too much and not enough people took the bite receiving their vaccination. Like many people agree, I’d rather had wasted loads of money then to be hit with the pandemic we all feared, with no medication to fight the battle… But I’m in awe.

What could we have done with that $260 million? Hmmm…

Overreaction to H1N1 Exposure

Renae & I

This weekend I had a moment of concern and overreacted to say the least. I can now laugh at my behavior but don’t know if I’d have done anything different. The Reed’s celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve, as we do most years, due to having a blended family. We figure it helps my husbands kids’ mother, and my daughter’s father, they could still celebrate on the day of Christmas with their other family and everybody is happy. Well, I had Renae at the house all week, she left Christmas Eve after our celebration to get ready for their Christmas day’s celebration, and I wasn’t expecting her back for a few days.

Renae pops up out the blue Christmas day, and of course we are all excited to have her back. But, first thing that pops out Renae’s mouth is that her sister has H1N1! This sister lives at their father’s house too. Oh no, for her sister, Oh no!!! Why is Renae over here? What if Renae has H1N1 and just hasn’t shown signs yet? What if the other kids get H1N1? Oh no, Jamarae and I have asthma! Oh no, I start a new job on Monday! I can’t afford to get sick! The baby!!! Poor Renae she was the last thing on my mind, more so because she was already exposed to H1N1, and because she is one who never gets sick and has zero health issues. Still, shame on me!

What to do… I was in a panic! “Renae, get in the shower and take the longest shower you ever had, gimme your clothes, and don’t touch anything in the house… Oh here, antibacterial stuff for your hands!”…”Don’t touch anything!!!” The poor girl took a long shower, and I immediately threw her clothes in the wash hoping to kill any germs she may have. I know she understood, if I thought I knew one with a germ phobia it would be her, I still felt bad.

So I get her dad on the phone, and question his reasoning for bringing “the exposed” back to my home. He lets me know I’m completely overreacting after he finally agrees to me dragging her back to his house until I’m sure she doesn’t have H1N1 herself. I drop her off, and then feel so bad that I turn into a mommy that most would call a “sucker”… All week she had been begging for unlimited text messaging because her grades are up, you guessed it, the “sucker mommy” called the phone company and gave “the exposed” what she wanted, unlimited text messaging.

I know I overreacted but I have to do what I have to do and keep it moving. I’ll let her come back in a few days, and she doesn’t have any symptoms so we are all good. What a mess, don’t you agree? How would have you handles the situation? Don’t be shy, you can tell me that I’m a bit off, I can’t take it.

My Guest Post on Living My Moment – H1N1 Vaccine: To Vaccinate or to Not Vaccinate

H1N1-VaccineI sit in the doctor’s waiting room so that my two year old, who we call Yissie, can get her shots updated all the while two young boys sit still with their faces strapped to a flu mask. “Oh NO,” I thought, H1N1 here we come. The poor boys sit there looking shamed due to them being the only ones partaking in this flu mask escapade. Then a little girl points them out in disbelief blurting out, “They’re SICK!” She says this over and over again embarrassing these poor boys. I truly wanted to hug them, but feared H1N1 would be knocking at our door all too soon.

We get called back past the waiting room and I’m very relieved. Then my poor lil’ Yissie has to go to the potty. GERMS, GERMS, and more GERMS is all that is on my mind as I sit her portable potty on the seat of the doctor offices toilet. Stacked high in the waste bin is tissue. This mountain of tissue made me more nervous then the two boys that may have had H1N1! What’s a mother to do? I hold Yissie’s hands high in the air and snap at her every time she gets close to touching anything.

After all these fears of my poor baby getting H1N1 within a thirty minutes span, the doctor tells me he can give her the H1N1 vaccine via nasal spray well after their recording told me they didn’t have any vaccines available.

Great, I’ve been at odds with the choices we have as parents… Too vaccinate or to not vaccinate? My husband texted me having an outright fit, he sternly told me she can and will not get the H1N1 vaccine the same day she receives the seasonal flu vaccine. He feels this would stress her lil’ body out if we gave her both vaccines. He tells me to wait a few weeks! Okay I’m darned if I do, and darned if I don’t.

Are you vaccinating your children with the H1N1 vaccine? I decided I will vaccinate my children with the H1N1 vaccine. I haven’t yet due to overcrowded clinics and because I just barely decided I was going to let my children get the vaccine but a few weeks ago. Please share by commenting if your family has been vaccinated or what your stance on the H1N1 vaccine is. I’m very interested in your experience and opinions. Please share by commenting below.

Flu Self-Assessment: H1N1 or Not?

I found a great tool for us all, Flu Self-Assessment! Yup, it’s a questionnaire that helps you sort out if we have H1N1 or not. This is great for us worrying types. I was up late worrying about Sinya’s symptoms, I get the picture and feel assured she has a common flu.

The Flu Self Assessment is brought to us by H1N1 Swine Flu Response Center, and the questionnaire is based off of material from Emory University. Using this tool when you have flu like symptoms should help you sort your symptoms in regards to  H1N1 versus the commmon flu. After using the Flu Self Assessment we should know what to do next if it is believed we have H1N1 as well.

Once you’re done taking this Flu Self Assessment you will have the opportunity to print out your questionnaire with the answers. This is helpful in case you don’t know what to tell the doctor.

Take your Flu Self Assessment today by clicking here!

Is the H1N1 Flu Vaccine Safe?

The H1N1 flu vaccine, will your family be vaccinated?

Here and there the media gives me a scare. This video is one out of a few good reports on the H1N1 flu vaccine. Searching the internet, I find information about the flu and the vaccine, but not much saying that the vaccine is safe… More so, I see the world telling me to stay clear away from the vaccine.

YouTube Preview Image

Watching the video, I feel a bit better about vaccinating my children. I still have concerns either way. My main concern is there hasn’t been enough testing, and many health professionals aren’t getting their families vaccinated.

What to do? I’m ready to go to extremes! Do I pass out face mask, or chose to homeschool? Yes I’m a scardy cat, the anti-bacterial has been passed out already, and I’ve over educated the kids on proper hand washing, and many times spoke of staying clear of sick children. What to do, What to do?!

Do I vaccinate my children and risk side effects, or do I not vaccinate them and risk the swine flu deciding my families fate? What is your family doing, vaccinating or not?

300 Students Ill at Nevada Union High! Swine Flu?

H1N1, Swine FluChannel 13 News reported Nevada Union High, in Grass Valley, Ca., had close to 300 absent last Tuesday. Could this be the H1N1 virus, swine flu, as we know it? Testing is being done, and students are encouraged to stay home while sick.

School just started, what’s to happen in months to come?

In years 2007-2008, Nevada Union High reported 2441 students in enrollment. Do the math, that’s about 12% of their students out ill, in one day! This can spread quickly.

Nevada Union took precautions late August, with recommendations to avoid the swine flu, this is quoted from their website:

  1. Frequent hand washing preferably with soap and water especially after coughing
  2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs enter the body this way.
  4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  5. Symptoms of swine flu include cough, fever (100 degrees or higher), sore throat, and body aches. Be alert for these.
  6. If you are sick with signs of the flu, stay home and do not return to work or school until the fever has been gone for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications. Typically this could be from 3-5 days after onset of symptoms.

Stay safe and be aware all! If you have tips for Reed What Matters readers to avoid the H1N1 virus please comment.
