Baby Safety & USB Cables

Posted 19 Jan 2010 — by Jennifer
Category All Things Techy, Reed Educates

Baby Safety is imperative and often enough something simply looked over can harm our little ones. In case you haven’t seen in the news a 16 month old little girl, Trinity Anderson, has been severly burned last week by sucking on an I-POD USB cable that was plugged into her mother’s laptop.

Flickr: Malarkey

This incident is something that can easily overlooked. Imagine sitting a few feet away from your baby while she is at play with her toys; maybe your reading, watching TV, or surfing the net, regardless you know your baby is fine.

You look over, low and behold, your baby really isn’t fine at all. Who would think a USB cord could do so much damage. I have my USB cord for my Blackberry and I-POD hanging from my PC, sure my baby is pass the “sucking on things” stage, but this must hit home for many.

Everyone please tuck your cords away or unplug them when not in use. Also, make sure you use your third eye checking on your baby more often then you would normally. My heart truly goes out to this little girl and her family. This is a reminder to us all, we can never be too careful.

Do you have any tips on child safety that most of us easily overlook. Please comment below to share with us. Thank you.

UberTwitter, a Blackberry application for Twitter users, just came out with a Beta 6 version offering much more then before. UberTwitter Beta 6 has so many features, is reliable, is user friendly, and has a functional sleek design.

New features that come with UberTwitter Beta 6:

  • Find people – find your friends, family, and those you network with using this function
  • UberBar – tabbed menu navigation that you can customize
  • Retweet – supports old and new method (drawback the “RT” still shows up in the front of the tweet on the new Retweet functionality, but works the new RT should)
  • Profile changes – you can update your profile and your profile picture.
  • Report Spam – this is a must have feature
  • Twitter’s Geo-Tagging feature – use “myloc.me URLs, Twitter Geo-Tagging” according to UberTwitter.com
  • Friend Picker – Type @ and a list of your friends pops up
  • Larger avatars – see others up-close and personal
  • TwitLonger – makestweets longer
  • Trending Topics – know what trends are happening as you tweet
  • Network Connection Logic – this helps make UberTwitter so dependable

These new features and UberTwitter’s new design helps make the Twitter experience, at times, better then Twitter itself. Without a doubt, UberTwitter has many features to better your Twitter experience, download or check out UberTwitter by clicking here.

Why Every Blogger and Blog Reader Should Have Google Friend Connect

Posted 30 Nov 2009 — by Jennifer
Category All Things Techy

GFCWhat is the big deal about Google Friend Connect? I have to say the tools are very unique and user friendly for both blog owners and blog readers alike!

As a reader, Google Friend Connect can give the writer to your favorite blog insight about who you are and what your interest are. That is a plus, it assists the one writing in meeting your needs. What a great way for me to get to know you!

Another huge bonus for Google Friend Connect users is that it makes blogs such as Reed What Matters interactive. We can all communicate with each other easier and we can get to know each other better. I love this factor. I get to know each of you through comments, but why not us all get to know each other. Afterall, we are a big family coming together to share our experiences with what really matters, family knowledge and entertainment!

Now for my fellow bloggers, sign your blog up for Google Friend Connect. Google has 6 reasons why you should do so:

  1. Add a member’s gadget – this helps your readers join your site and connect with other readers of your site.
  2. Add fun gadgets to your site – this will enable your blog to be more interactive. You can add many comment and rating tools if you like.
  3. Find out what your readers true interest are or their demographics - this will bring you that much closer to your readers. If you see that most of your readers like animals… Maybe you can write about animals and tie it into your niche. This tool is nifty, you can ask these questions as they sign up to your site or in a poll later down the line.
  4. Newsletters folks – create and send your readers your very own newsletter. Stay connected!
  5. Ads aren’t so annoying for your readers – Ads will tie into your reader’s interest
  6. More tools, More data – Showing your subscribers growth, and showing you answers to your polls.

So readers and writers, please sign up for Google Friend Connect or log in on my sidebar over there ——-> Opps, down a bit… Yup, there it is, right above the video on the lower right side!

If you found this helpful please subscribe to our updates by clicking here.

Thanks friends.

My Top Commentators & This Great Widget

Posted 20 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
Category All Things Techy, Reed Reviews, Reed Tidbits
topcommentatorI just added a nifty tool to Reed What Matters! Top Commentators Widget, it’s on our right sidebar to the bottom a bit. This tool tells everyone who comments the most on Reed What Matters website. I set it up to list the top 5 commentators for the last 90 days. I’m in love with this tool. I can now formally thank my top 4 commentators:

1. My Mama

Mama, I love you and thank you for reading my blog regardless of how busy you are! I thank you even more for leaving such great feedback in our comments. Everyone check her out! She is an amazing soul who does lots for our homeless community and for our climate. You can spot her efforts at: SafeGround Sacramento & SHOC!

2. Hailey’s Dragonfly Garden

My lovely friend with a sweet soul I met on Twitter! She is the reason I’m only formally thanking my top 4 commentators (she can’t decide if she wants to type her user name on our website as “Hailey’s” or “Haileys” so she stole two spots Ha-Ha!) She is always there for me when I need her to be, and she always reminds me to have a good day. She also has a fabulous website offering the best handmade soaps! Not only is her soaps the best, but they’re affordable. Check out my review and her site here: Hailey’s Dragonfly Garden of Botanicals Review & Hailey’s Dragonfly Garden.

3. Donna

Someone I’m very fond of. I found her on iMommyTalk.com. Most of her post I have to comment because the topics are great. She Vlogs (video blogs), I don’t always get to watch her videos because my home gets pretty noisy. She covers me there and types up a summery of her vlog. Still video or summery, COMMENT WORTHY!  Thank you Donna for a great website!

4. Toya

Another friend I met on Twitter. This lady here, she has a deep spirited soul. Go to her blog and you have to think. Soothing soulful music, content that enriches my soul, and I can’t wait… She is writing a book! Thanks Toya, for being you! Check her out here: Tales of Literary Nobody  (She is REALLY Somebody)

I will continue to show love to my top commentators, that means free advertising for you if you have a website or a business!!! And If you don’t, either way I want to show the love to those that show it to me! Thanks friends!

Tweep ML Not #FollowFriday

Posted 18 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
Category All Things Techy

TWEEPML

I’m not using #FollowFriday on Twitter anymore, the last two Friday’s I used an application called TweepML instead. If you aren’t aware what #FollowFriday or TweepML is here is a little breakdown:

Brief breakdown of TweepML and #Follow Friday for Twitter users:

  • “TweepML is a simple format to make it easy for people to share a list of Twitter users” (according to TweepML)
  • Every Friday twitter users use the hash tag #FollowFriday (some use #FF) to list their favorite tweeps recommending these tweeps to others. I like to add a reason for my tweeps to follow my favorites in my tweet, i.e. Homeless Issues, engaging, makes me laugh, etc…

Why I use Tweep ML instead of #FollowFriday

  • Easy to use – I create a group of tweeps, name the group so others know what sets them apart from the rest, and if I want to I can write a side note on a particular tweep (name, or why they are special)
  • Not redundant – I share a link to my favorites and can list user after user. These usernames aren’t broken down into numerous tweets. One link, one tweet per group and it’s that simple.
  • Easy to follow my favorites – tweeps can follow all my favorites or be selective still all one click once decided which to follow. With Follow Friday you have to click the name of who you want to follow, click follow, and then go back to the list to see if there are others you would like to follow.
  • No unnecessary noise – it’s not spammy at all.
  • You can use TweepMl anyday not just on Friday.

The only drawback of TweepML, my tweeps have no idea that I’m spreading love their way unless they follow the link themselves but with #FollowFriday my recommendation shows up on their mention screen so they’re very aware.

With that said here are my favorite tweeps using TweepML:

Educated Me (Mostly blogger stuff)

Enlightens Me or Makes Me Laugh

Favorite Homeless Issues

True Twitter Friends

What other tools do you use to recommend your favorite tweeps? Please comment below, you could inspire our next post!

Internet Safety for Teens

Posted 14 Oct 2009 — by Jennifer
Category All Things Techy

Renae

Who knew National Protect Your Identity Week starts in a few days and runs from October 17-24th. My teens are grounded from the computer, one for a lack of better judgment and the other for grades. But soon as they get it right, internet safety tips will be reviewed once again.

I found a great article on teen safety in regards to internet use on idexperts’ website called “Eight Safety Tips for Teens When “Hanging Out” Online.”

Top tips for teen’s internet safety:

  • Don’t give out your id numbers – social security, driver license, identification, library card, medical id… None, dont give out any identification numbers.
  • Don’t post any personal information -your full name, school name, age, address, phone number. Not only could stalkers find, but fraud can find you this way.
  • Ban email and social networking quizzes – when you use these fun quizzes the application has rights to your personal information. Quizzes from friends are okay.
  • Don’t let people know where you are or where you are going – including non-specific places. If my age is listed as 16 and I say I’m going to my school dance. Someone can use the internet to find out which high schools in my city are having a dance. Bam! Not good.
  • Set your profile to private – this is a good one. That way nobody can see your teens’ information without their permission.
  • Use a non personal email address for social networking sites. This is key. If your account is hacked, the hacker can use your email address for many scams.
  • Secure your connections – Dont use public computers to engage in social networking, and lock your phones (be sure parents have your password).
  • “Be selective about what pictures you text or post on your pageIs it a photo you would want your parents to see? Treat your Internet activity like a digital tattoo. Once you post something, it cannot be taken back. Even if you erase the posting, there are cached versions and backups on servers across the country.”

These tips should be used by adults as well, but most of us know these tips if we are using social network sites. Any other tips or any questions please comment below.

Pure Laziness, Too Dependant, or BOTH

Cell phones

The husband is laying down upstairs watching TV after a hard days work. The kids and I are downstairs keeping quiet so the husband can rest.

Jamarae, my 10 year old ask: “What’s wrong with my dad’s cell phone, why isn’t that his number anymore?”

Me: It’s his number; I have to pay the bill! (He has metropcs, it’s an unlimited prepaid plan… You forget the due date and you are reminded by being disconnected)

Jamarae: Well then, how do I get a hold of him?

Me: (Thinking to self, is he serious?!) “YOU GO UPSTAIRS!”

I do the same thing don’t get me wrong. I text my husband or call my husband when he is just 15 feet away in the back patio. But if his phone is off or charging I know how to get a hold of him. I get up and walk to him to talk to him.

Do we rely on cell phones and computers a little too much? My son almost gave up asking his dad something, he had no idea he can actually walk up the stairs to talk to him. What is wrong with us in today’s age?

This week, to set a good example I opt to just get up and talk to the husband. I won’t call him if he is within walking distance. My poor son and it’s my entire fault!

Note: My dummy move, why did I text my husband this morning… wondering why I haven’t gotten a text back… “HIS PHONE IS OFF!” Duh!
