Laying down on my side in a fetal position with my feet resting on the bed rail in case I flinch is how my spinal tap began. Discomfort to begin with was the sensations I felt as my neurologist pushed his fingers along my spine firmly looking for the proper spot in my back to start. Once “the spot” was found it was time to get started.
My neurologist reminds me to keep still as he spreads iodine on my back to prevent infection. Then the surgical sheet is placed on my back to help keep “the spot” centered. “Now I will numb the top layer of your skin, you will feel a pinch and it will burn slightly,” my neurologist explains. Good grief, that was easy.
Now I’m advised to let my neurologist know as he goes deeper with this numbing medication to guide him. Do I feel pain to the left, right or is it centered. Doing so will tell him where to go with his lumbar puncture needle once we are ready for that. So far so good!
Now it’s time for the big one!
“Left”
“Left”
“Centered”
“It burns, it burns… My Leg, it BURNS!!! IT’S BURNING!”
“My thigh, is this normal… IT BURNS!!!”
The sensation I felt through my left thigh was extreme and scared me but intrigued me all the same. I felt each nerve respond to this procedure in a very bad way. My nerves were screaming and running far from the pain. My nerves wanted out, they felt as though they were going to burst through my skin to run away from this pain all to cause me the greatest pain I have ever felt in my life. I felt each nerve flow through a tunnel almost like a hair shaft… many of them, all headed in the same direction and all headed down my leg at the same pace to screech to a halt at my knee. One my nerves stopped running they seemed to want to burst. I felt each nerve expand. As if I didn’t know any better, I thought my leg was going to explode and bust open shattering in pieces.
My neurologist pulls out to start again. This time not so bad… just a slight shocking sensation in my left lower leg. Time is now going by slow… very slow. He fills four vials of my spinal fluid and it’s dripping out ever so slowly but we finished. Doctors orders: Lay down the whole day, not to forget plenty of tylenol and caffeine.
What an experience, but well worth it. I will let you all know what I find out now that we have come this far! Look for my test results soon. Thanks friends.
