This week I’ve been sifting through my belongings, packing and such! I find that many things my family considers junk another can use! Of course, it’s time to give back. Then I think about those in need that need more then what I have sitting in my home. What can I do more to give back?

Think of the little things I buy throughout the month, a Pepsi here, a bag of chip there… I probably spend a few dollars a day on much of nothing for the kids and me. I set to do something more for another and a bit less for myself! As I think of this my daughter speaks to me about wanting to blog about a report she is doing for abused children in Africa. What better way to tie in my wanting to give more to another in need. Maybe she would like to help those she is researching.

After all this thought I was contacted by globalgiving.com (a million little earth-changing ideas)! Sky is the limit. Just about any cause you can think of from homelessness, to climate change, to children in need they have a cause listed in which we could help. You name it; there is a way to help out through their website.

I’m sitting my children down to tell them to pick a cause dear to them. When they want that little bag of chips from the corner store, I will ask them, “Chips or your Cause?” They can decide where that dollar goes. I’ll allow them to earn extra money for their cause as well. I’m excited and will keep you posted on which child of mine picked which cause and how much they were able to donate.

Sinya is thinking of helping Kenya families have clean water and Jamarae is thinking of helping Afghan boys trade guns for books. We will see what they chose and how much they earn. I’m very excited.

It’s been cold out, real cold. I lay in my bed last night with the chills because my husband was hogging the covers. Don’t I have nerve? I could have turned on the heater, or grabbed another blanket easily! What if I didn’t have the luxury of shelter, a heater, extra blankets like many families who are searching for a place just to rest as the shelters fill up!

In recent news, KCRA.com mentioned Sacramento’s Mayor Kevin Johnson spoke publicly about the the city, county and federal government approving funds for Sacramento to “create 269 shelter beds.” That is great, but what is the city going to do about the many families that will still need shelter.

SafeGround Sacramento has a temporary solution and Mayor Kevin Johnson hears their voices. SafeGround Sacramento “called for a moratorium on enforcement of the city’s anti-camping ordinance.” As it stands today our homeless community is awoken when found sleeping on the streets to move or can be sited with a ticket for illegal camping. Imagine that, no place to sleep and you wake up to a ticket you can’t afford all because you have no where else to sleep. SafeGroundSacramento aims to help those who can’t just rest. Johnson hears their voices KCRA.com states he has “said he will have more to say next month about a permanent camping site for the homeless.”

Today is Blog Action Day; bloggers are uniting today to tell the world that it’s time the United States takes an act on climate change needs. This brings me to discussing an everyday issue in most of our homes that can help tremendously.

How much food does your family waste? We do our share in saving our leftovers for the next day, but at times thing go bad or the kid’s scraps get looked over.

Two productive things can be done with this waste:

1. For example, RDN Food Waste provides residence the option to recycle food and organic waste. This waste is picked up separately then basic garbage and is processed to soil for future plants. Of course, if you have compost for your garden, you can use the waste for your own home.
2. Bay Area utility recognizes that many restaurants are wasting food. In recognizing this they give restaurants an option to recycle food and organic waste. Over 2300 restaurants are participating and are taking corrective action of employees that don’t use the recycling program. Bay area utility then processes the food and organic waste to methane gas, and use the methane gas for renewable energy. According to Climate Ark website, “the utility now powers its wastewater treatment plant, which serves about 650,000 homes in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, by processing many kinds of waste, including the food scraps.” Also, noted by ”the end of 2010, the utility expects to double its capacity to create power … allowing it to sell more than 5 megawatts of energy to Pacific Gas & Electric Co. The utility eventually hopes that about 1 megawatt will come from food scraps, enough to power 1,300 homes…”

With that said do your part! Serve smaller portions to avoid waste and obesity (I’ve lost 10 pounds eating smaller portions). Serving smaller portions will lead to less scraps being left over by the kids. If you are still fighting with waste find a recycling program that best suits you. I will be looking into recycling programs in my area.

For our government, please adopt more programs like RDN Food Waste, and Bay Area Utility.

Reading the article “Human rights activist finds noose on porch” in the Spokesman Review brings me sorrow. This woman, Rachel Dolezal, who directs Coeur d’Alene’s Human Rights Education Institute, woke up Sunday morning to a noose on her porch. This is horrible. To top it off, she has to decide to educate her son on the matter or to make up some explanation to give him peace of mind; she decided giving him peace of mind was best!

In examining this article further, the Spokesman Review states, a “human rights activist Tony Stewart said racially motivated incidents are on the rise here and nationwide. He traced that to the increasing diversification of the population and to the election of the nation’s first black president”

More to often we are seeing daily, a racial divide among our communities for sure. More often issues are posed as black or white, and not just a people thing. In some ways, our communities are more aware of racism then before, and in some ways our communities are denying the racial divide that is evident in out communities! How do you deny what is in our faces, watching people holding up signs of President Obama as a witch doctor, among other things.

What changes have you noticed in your communities since President Obama has become our President? Are your communities divided by racial tension? Are hate crimes on a rise where you come from? Or is it completely different in your community, maybe your community has come together building a tighter force and now works together in ways that all communities should work together? Maybe, everything is just the same as before where you come from! Please share by commenting what your observations have been in regards to your community.

Before I start talking about the incident I must say, I don’t like the terms black or white, and don’t think African American or Caucasian is any better. That’s another blog post in it’s own. I will use black and white for this blog, since that is what is widely used!

One more thing, did you notice the pretty flowers on the bus, GO  FIGURE!

With that said, If you haven’t seen the video or heard about the altercation, a teenage boy got beat up pretty bad on the school bus yesterday morning. My heart goes out to the boy. Going to school, there should be no threat of violence in any form!

Basically, as it’s told, a young white male got on the bus, and it was already pretty packed. Many of the kids denied allowing the boy a seat. Finally, the young male moves a black male’s bag, throws it or places it on the ground. The kids on the bus were teasing the young black male for allowing the young white male to do that to his bag. The young white male appears to have something funny to say, then a huge fight breaks lose. The young white male got beat up bad, and hardly defended himself. Again my heart goes out to the boy. If that was my kid, Id be up at the school demanding “Bully Intervention” in anyway I could. I do that now with simpler things.

Now, I can relate. Ive been on both sides of this picture taking the bus as a young teen… Ive denied those I didn’t like a seat, as if I had any right. I have been denied a seat as well. In my case… Ive moved bags, Ive said mean things, Ive pushed those out my way! Wrong, but being on both ends of this situation, never did a fight break out over a seat.

I sympathise for the boy wholeheartedly, but do see the video for what it is. I don’t hear anyone saying racial content, and until I hear the young white male say that it was racially motivated that will be my stance on it. I don’t know what happens everyday for those boys. I don’t know if there has been racial tension. Without the facts, I can only say I feel this was a bully situation. Had it been white kids on one black kid, I would say the same thing!

Please America don’t speak so harsh until we know the facts. According to BND, and the rest of the world… After interviewing everyone, this is not racially motivated.

President Obama is not a christian, not born in the United States, and is trying to brain wash our children… What are the other things those blame him for, that have nothing to do with the fact he is our President?

Reading On Racism, Death Threats & The Blindness of Those Who Will Not See, by David Sirota, political Journalist of Huffington Post, I feel that many Americans have lost their minds. Are you serious?! Read the article please, Sirota received death threats for believing in our President, and Speaking up on many of Amercia’s racial undertones! Wonder if I’ll get some, just for agreeing with him! You never know.

Way to go, David Sirota! I honor you today for speaking up, and taking a stand for what you believe in, death threats or not!

I dont agree with everything President Obama has done as President, big or small. I haven’t agreed with everything any President has done! Obama has been our President less then a year, can we all get a long and give him a chance? Like the outcome or not, he has done much since being in office!

After watching the video, I wonder what your thoughts are? Are some Americans having issues in accepting him as our President because of his race?
